Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls
Provides girls in secondary school education with access to professional role models, career education and the resources to live their dreams.
The goal of the new Soroptimist global program Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls is that through education and access to role models, girls will be empowered to pursue their career goals and reach their full potential. Surveys, interviews and focus groups conducted by Soroptimist International of the America's concluded that girls in secondary school need access to mentors and trusted adults who can share their knowledge and experience. The curriculum will cover career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles to success and moving forward after setbacks or failures.
On March 31, 2017 Soroptimist International of London, in partnership with the YMCA, is introducing the Dream It Be It program to high school girls, new to London, and who are involved in the YMAP at the YMCA. This program is generously supported by the Smart and Caring Community Fund within the London Community Foundation.
Dream It Be It - March 31, 2017
Soroptimist International London partnered with YMAP to deliver Dream It Be It on March 31, 2017.
YMAP is a program run by the YMCA for high school students who are new to Canada. Seventeen girls who came to Canada as immigrants or refugees and who are in the YMAP program participated in the Dream It Be It.
The Director of YMAP and two Program Facilitators were full of ideas and were very helpful in delivering the program. One of the highlights of the day was a presentation by two of our former Live Your Dream Award winners who told their life story and spoke about overcoming obstacles. The girls found their stories very inspirational and were very appreciative that these women took time to spend with them.
Another speaker was from the Sexual Assault Centre and a Youth Worker from the Intercommunity Health Centre showed the girls how to make stress balls and conducted relaxation exercises at the end of the day. The girls said they had fun, learned a lot, and asked if they could come back again next year.
